Mulled Wine

Mulled wine is a warm, festive beverage traditionally enjoyed during the colder months. It's made with red wine heated along with spices and sometimes fruit, creating a delicious and aromatic drink.

Here's a basic guide to making mulled wine:

Ingredients:

  • 1 (750 ml) Bottle of Red Wine (traditionally full-bodied, but you can experiment)
  • 1 Orange, sliced
  • 1/2 cup Sweetener (Honey, Molasses, Agave syrup, Maple syrup, or Grape molasses.)
  • 3-4 Whole Cloves
  • 2-3 Cinnamon Sticks
  • Other Spices (optional, to taste):  ginger, star anise, cardamom pods, nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot on the stovetop, combine the wine, orange slices, sweetener, cloves, and cinnamon sticks.  You can add other spices according to your preference.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it simmers gently.  Don't let it boil! Boiling can burn the spices and evaporate the alcohol.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Strain the mulled wine into mugs using a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices and orange slices.
  5. (Optional) Add a splash of brandy or cognac for an extra kick.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips:

  • Experiment with different spices to create your own unique flavor profile.
  • If you find the mulled wine too tart, add more sweetener to taste.
  • Add as Orange Peel Twist for granish to make it "fancy."
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
  • Mulled wine is a great base for customization! You can add chopped nuts, dried fruits, or even a citrus liqueur for a twist.

Enjoy your warm and cozy mug of mulled wine!
